Gas Girls promoted, City Women relegated

By Martin Booth  Monday May 10, 2021

On the same day that Bristol Rovers were declared champions of the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League, Bristol City were relegated from the top flight.

City’s relegation from the Women’s Super League after a 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion sees them drop down to the semi-professional Championship.

It likely means a major clear-out of the current team, who needed a win on the final day of the season to stay in the WSL, which they finished the season in 12th place with a goal difference of -54 after 22 games.

At Lockleaze Sports Centre, promotion for the Gas Girls was secured after Abbeymead Rovers were unable to fulfil a full team.

Celebrations could finally begin on the pitch for the team who are officially in their second inaugural season following a relaunch in 2019, with the Gas Girls’ debut season declared null and void due to the pandemic.

Promotion does not guarantee entry into the South West Regional League, but an application to climb into the league has already been delivered to the FA.
