Cricket World Cup comes to County Ground
As part of the ICC Cricket World Cup, County Ground is hosting three games this month, just two years after the Women’s World Cup came to Ashley Down.
The tournament takes place every four years, featuring 10 teams with each nation playing each other in a full round-robin format, until the finals, which is being held at Lord’s on Sunday, July 14.
Afghanistan are ranked tenth in the ICC one-day rankings, as the emergence of the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman has raised expectations. They have a habit of upsetting established teams, as last year they won the World Cup qualifier tournament against West Indie, knocked Sri Lanka out of the Asia Cup and tied with India. The team are aiming to qualify for the semi-finals, says chief selector, Dawlat Khan Ahmadzai.
Australia’s fast bowlers have been preparing for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 with a specialised training drill. Under the supervision of bowling coach Adam Griffith, the defending champions have been practising hard at their training camp in Southampton to master their bowling skills.
The County Ground will host three games
After earning an unexpected call-up to Pakistan’s squad for the World Cup, fast bowler Wahab Riaz wants to make this opportunity count.
Having not played one-day cricket for Pakistan since the Champions Trophy in 2017, the left-armer has been criticised by the head coach, Mickey Arthur, for having lost his watch-winning abilities.
Wahab says he was always fully prepared for the World Cup, despite the criticism and his chances appearing slim.
Chaminda Vaas, winner of the 1996 men’s Cricket World Cup, believes that Sri Lanka have some ‘special’ cricketers. He called the Sri Lanka team “unpredictable”, as he told the ICC, “They need to be united, and there are special cricketers who can perform extremely well there (in England). If they have the team spirit, unity among the team, I think Sri Lanka will do well in the World Cup.”
The Bangladesh head coach, Steve Rhodes, said that the teams tri-series success in Ireland proved that there is more to them than just their “big five” players.
Bangladesh achieved their first victory in a multi-nation tournament with a five-wicket win over West Indies in the final – a match they played without their all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.
