My Bristol Favourites: Toby Bywater
Toby Bywater of Zazu’s Kitchen in Stokes Croft and Bishopston has now branched out into pubs with the reopening of the Greenbank in Easton. The 100-year-old former hotel on Belle Vue Road was to be demolished to make way for housing, but planning was denied after strong opposition.
Here are Toby’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Gloucester Road
“I know, a cheeky biggie to begin, but the Gloucester Road has it all. From shops: Scoopaway, Iota, The Fish Shop, Playful, Oddsox. To fantastic eateries such as Zazu’s Kitchen (biased but truthful), The Gallimaufry and even the most authentic of Indian restaurants, Dev’s Kerala. And you can’t forget the Golden Lion for amazing free music, paid for beer and very charming but fairly priced staff.
Harry Blades & Angry Daves
“Simply the best barbers/hairdressers/trainer and general dope clothes outlet. They are all ace and you never hear the same tune twice.”
3 Christmas Steps, www.hbad.co.uk
St Andrew’s Park
“Just great for every age and dog breed, mongrels included. Guess where I’m based.”
The Ox
“It’s not the cheapest but worth every penny. The tandoori quail starter was possibly the best thing I’ve eaten in a decade, food-wise.”

The Greenbank
“A pub as it should be, beers, ales, ciders, spirits, great food (you can eat at the bar or a table), great staff, relaxed comfortable surroundings, and the hub of the neighbourhood with a Sunday roast to die for. Honest, me? As the day is long.”
