My Bristol favourites: Miranda Cromwell
Miranda Cromwell is a director, choreographer and dramaturg who is a co-artistic director at Twisted Theatre and was formerly the director of the Young Company at the Bristol Old Vic.
Twisted Theatre’s Death and Treason, Rhyme and Reason at Fiddlers on Thursday, October 23 “presents the dark and debauched secrets of our familiar childhood rhymes with original songs, strings, drinking, rhythm and silliness”.
Here are Miranda’s top-five Bristol favourites:
‘Cheers drive’
“I love that in Bristol it is still normal to thank the bus driver. I work in London too and it is always a relief when I get back on West Country soil and can make passing comments to the people I interact with all day without seeming odd. It’s a small thing but it’s polite, it’s warm and it makes I smile.”
The grass roots companies
“Bristol is a hotbed of talent and collaboration. Across art forms and business, people are getting on with it and involving their local community. The Love Inn run by Team Love who also organise Love Saves the Day festival is a welcome addition to the bustling nightlife on Stokes Croft and features a host of brilliant DJs. Products are created here and created ethically like the award-winning Magic Mirror invented and produced by Liesel Corp, and Puckoo Couture specialising in incredible handmade lycra outfits.”
The theatre scene
“The theatre scene that Bristol has developed demonstrates the entrepreneurial nature of the city and the sense of possibility. There is Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory and Ferment investing in new work at the Bristol Old Vic. The Wardrobe Theatre above the White Bear pub where you can see all productions for under a fiver. Or the truly inspirational Mayfest that hosts some of the world’s most exciting new work over a month across the entire city. There are venues to house work at all stages of development and companies to suit all appetites and wallets.”
Renato’s
“This bar and pizzeria is situated on King Street only a few doors down from the Old Vic and is decorated with photos and posters of past productions and actors. Renato’s has been the setting for many a well-needed and occasionally well-deserved pint. I have lost many evenings here, had many enthralling conversations with visiting artists and said many a tearful goodbye. Plus they serve the best pizzas you can find anywhere in town, late into the night.”
Fiddlers
“A brilliant music venue in Bedminster that supports all kinds of the best live music in the city. I have enjoyed nights in Fiddlers dancing my socks off till the early hours. Twisted Theatre will be performing Death and Treason, Rhyme and Reason here. It’s our only gig of the autumn tour in Bristol and we are really excited to be playing to a home crowd. Fiddlers is the perfect venue for our dark and debauched original music based on childhood nursery rhymes.”
