My Bristol Favourites: Alan Toyne

By Martin Booth  Saturday May 16, 2020

Alan Toyne is team leader of small mammals at Bristol Zoo and co-leads Bristol Zoological Society’s conservation project with lemurs in Madagascar.

He is one of the team of keepers who looks after the tree kangaroos, with the new joey recently making an appearance for the first time.

Bristol Zoological Society has recently launched a fundraising appeal to ensure the future of its work saving wildlife. To find out more or to make a donation, visit www.bristolzoo.org.uk/bzsappeal.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

These are Alan’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Cargo Cantina

“There are just too many good places in Wapping Wharf to mention, but the standout for me is Cargo Cantina for mezcal margaritas and tacos. It’s always busy, you can’t book a table, so just turn up and hope for the best and as a result end up sat next to interesting people.”

The Athenian

During lockdown, The Athenian continues to offer takeaway lunches as well as a selection of Greek fare for the evening, all of which are available for delivery via Deliveroo – photo by The Athenian

“Another place in Cargo 2 at Wapping Wharf, I love the souvlaki at The Athenian. It always takes me back almost 20 years to when I was backpacking around Greece.”

Watershed

“I’ve lost count of the number of films I’ve seen at the Watershed over the years. The Wildscreen Festival of 2018 was particularly memorable.”

El Rincon

El Rincon is a tiny Spanish bar at the end of North Street. It always has a great atmosphere and feels like being in Madrid.”

The food at St Nick’s Market

“There is always a mouth-watering variety of tasty options. And it’s particularly great when they run the night markets.”
