Tributes paid to City superfan Stoney Garnett
One of Bristol City’s most famous fans has died just days before the start of the new football season.
Comedian and compere Stoney Garnett also twice ran to be mayor of Bristol in 2012 and 2016, with free cider for all among his campaign pledges.
Well-known for his red feathered fedora which he bought on a holiday in Austria, former postman Stoney was born in Knowle West and lived in Whitchurch
The young Stoney went to Connaught Road School and his first job was with British Rail at what is now the Engine Shed, where he helped keep the train records.
After leaving British Rail, he worked in a succession of jobs before becoming a postman for 24 years.
He got into comedy through compering at charity events and fundraisers around the city and kept it up most of his life.
He even had a spell in the world of showbusiness with a few extras roles in films where he met Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone and Roy Orbison.
He spent the final part of his working life at drinks wholesaler Matthew Clarke.
Warm tributes have been paid to Stoney, who used to sit in the Dolman Stand at Ashton Gate, including from Bristol City and the Bristol City Former Players Association:
