Thousands still party in streets despite ‘scaled-down’ Carnival
While officially sanctioned events took place at Circomedia, Lakota Gardens, Lost Horizon and the Malcolm X Centre, thousands of people packed onto the streets of St Paul’s as the community came together to host their own carnival celebrations.
The current custodians of St Paul’s Carnival had announced that 2025 was a “stripped back” version of the biannual event.
The theme for Saturday was ‘Roots of Resistance’, marking the 60th anniversary of the 1965 Race Relations Act.
The Roots of Resistance celebration took place through a specially curated programme called ‘Back A Yard’ – a common Jamaican phrase used to refer to “back home” – with events including Carnival’s traditional elders’ brunch and a ‘Windrush human library’ at Circomedia.
Away from the official events, however, numerous soundsystems had been set up on the streets of St Paul’s with the unofficial celebrations continuing long into the night.
