St George’s
Tucked away just off Park Street, St Georges is a former church, built between 1821 and 1823 in the Greek Revival Style. For the last three decades it’s been a concert hall, famed for its pin-drop perfect acoustic. Following a dramatic multi-million pound refurbishment in 1999, it now hosts nearly 300 events a year, from classical concerts with orchestras and world class soloists to jazz, blues, soul, folk and world music, plus a thoughtful roster of spoken word events and family-friendly stuff. The gardens are a treat for a pre-gig wander, too – look out for the various Caithness stone benches, plaques and posts by Scottish sculptor-poet Ian Hamilton-Finlay, inscribed with quotations from Virgil’s Eclogues, Janacek’s Letters to Kamila and Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
