Singapore president tours Bristol’s top spots

By Chris Brown  Friday Oct 24, 2014

The president of Singapore has visited Bristol to take a tour of the city’s most famous names.

Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife were on the fourth day of a state visit to the UK, and visited the studios of Aardman Animations and M Shed.

Meanwhile, a memorandum of understanding between the University of Bristol and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was signed.

Under the agreement, both universities will collaborate on smart, ‘wearable’ technologies such as web-connected wristbands.

The technology will make it easier for the elderly to continue living independently, while allowing family and caregivers to ensure their health and well-being are properly monitored.

Dr Tan also met about 80 Singaporean students who are currently studying at the university.

Earlier, he toured the M Shed museum with mayor George Ferguson.

“It was a great pleasure to welcome the president to M Shed and showcase the regeneration of Bristol’s harbourside into what is one of the world’s most vibrant historic waterfront redevelopments, and an area that now draws visitors from all over the world,” Ferguson said.

“His visit is yet another demonstration of the increasing profile that Bristol commands on an international stage.”
