Mother of detained Bristol activist ‘going through hell’
The mother of a Bristol man believed to have been kidnapped by Israeli forces from international waters made an emotional speech at a rally called to raise awareness of the plight of him and other members of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The current whereabouts of Ben Trowell, 36, from St George are unknown following the IDF intercepting 21 boats containing 179 activists in international waters near Crete.
The flotilla is carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is under an Israeli naval blockade.
Israel has called the flotilla a “PR stunt” and say its actions complied with international law.
Speaking at a rally by the Cascade Steps organised by Bristol Palestine Alliance, Liz Trowell said she is “so so proud of Ben”.
“Whatever they are going through, nothing compares to what the Palestinians are going through.
“I’m going through hell but I remember that and it’s true.”
Ben’s uncle, Phil, called his nephew “a kind and gentle man”.
“I don’t know what the press will say about him but we can guess,” Phil added.
Also among those speaking at the rally on Thursday evening was Green Party councillor, Abdul Malik.
Malik said: “Injustice has a way of calling Bristolians onto the street when something is not right.”
The councillor for Ashley ward also read out a statement from Ben’s MP, Labour’s Kerry McCarthy, who has raised Ben’s case “urgently” with the Foreign Office and says she is “doing everything I can to secure his release”.
The Bristol East MP said: “Intercepting the fleet in international waters, hundreds of miles from Israel, and detaining those on board, is an unacceptable and illegal action by Israel.
“The flotilla was a peaceful mission, hoping to deliver much needed humanitarian aid to Gaza…
“I’ll try to keep everyone informed, while prioritising support for the family during what will be a very distressing and worrying time for them.”
