Metro mayor independent launches campaign
Businessman Dr John Savage exclusively revealed his metro mayor candidacy in Bristol24/7 and will officially launch his campaign on Tuesday pledging “bold vision and leadership”.
Dr Savage, who is the chairman of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and executive chairman of Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Initiative, said : “This is a new position that has been created to secure more local power and £30million of extra funding per year from government.
“If we elect an effective Mayor this figure will increase. I have lived here for over 40 years and for the first time in my life I see the possibility of a real shift in power from Westminster to us.
The new mayor will be elected in May and will preside over new spending powers for transport, housing and education for the Greater Bristol area.
Dr Savage said: “It is a huge opportunity for the West of England and we cannot afford to waste it. We need a Mayor who can work with all leaders across the three local authorities and who will not be bound by bureaucracy nor be divisive; a big part of the challenge will be to identify common purpose and facilitate co-operation for the good of all. I intend to serve one term and will focus on five areas that can be delivered in my time.
“I am standing in this election because our politicians must do better…We cannot afford the complacency of the past. The role of Metro Mayor is for someone who can match the ambitions of every sector and get the job done.”
The former high sheriff of Bristol and member of the Merchant Venturers, Dr Savage also stood as Labour’s candidate for Avon and Somerset police and crime commissioner election in 2012, losing out to independent candidate Sue Mountstevens .
Under the new system, Marvin Rees will remain mayor of Bristol, but will have the metro mayor working at a level above him and with more extensive powers.
Elections for metro mayor will take place on Thursday May 4.
