In photos: Grand Iftar 2025 on St Mark’s Road
On Sunday, the Easton Jamia Mosque on St Mark’s Road invited members of the local community to come for the Grand Iftar.
An iftar is the meal Muslims have after sunset to break their fast during Ramadan. It is normally followed by prayer.
Due to the high level of interest shown, the number of attendees was capped at 500.
Abdul Malik, Green councillor and chair at the Jamia Mosque, had this to say about the event: “There were tears during the prayers. Real, quiet ones.
“As names were whispered for the people of Gaza and Sudan, the weight of global suffering settled gently among us. It didn’t overshadow the evening—it deepened it. It reminded us that Ramadan is about more than hunger.”
Traders rolled down their shutters early to help. Young children ran up and down with trays of dates. A woman who had never stepped inside a mosque before said she felt “completely at home”.
Malik observed that Bristol has that power to unite people in times of trouble.
He said: “In a time when so much feels broken, St Marks Road gives us a glimpse of what can be healed. Yes, things are difficult—locally, nationally and globally—but on this little stretch of Easton, hope still lives.”
