Improved accessibility at popular east Bristol beauty spot

By Ellie Pipe  Thursday May 19, 2022

Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility can now enjoy the spectacular views from the top of Troopers Hill following completion of a new path.

The freshly-laid trail leading from the field up to the chimney on the popular east Bristol beauty spot fulfils a key aim of a Ways to Nature project, which recognised the barriers to nature faced by some.

The aim was to improve access to all, as well as to protect and conserve wildlife.

Friends of Troopers Hill secured funding to create a path through Troopers Hill Field in 2018 and work was finally completed in 2020, making the hill wheelchair accessible from the Malvern Road and Summerhill Road direction – the only route that avoids a steep climb.

Bristol City Council has now covered the cost of repairing, resurfacing and widening the path leading up to the chimney and bench overlooking the city skyline, further improving accessibility onto the hill.

Welcoming completion of the project, Rob Acton-Campbell, a Friends of Troopers Hill committee member and Bristol Parks Forum volunteer, said: “We are very pleased that the council has been able to fund the repair and resurfacing of this path, which completes the work started just before the first lockdown to create a smooth path from Malvern Road to the top of Troopers Hill.

“This will allow wheelchair users and others easy access to be able to experience the magnificent views from the top of the hill.”

Benches that were removed to lay the path are due to be replaced soon.
