‘High street hero’ nominated for award

By Ned Holmes  Wednesday Aug 10, 2016

Simon Dicken, a store manager from Bedminster, is in with a chance of winning a share of £10,000 in prize money as part of the Great British High Street Competition.

The Wilkinson employee has been nominated for an individual award in recognition of his hard work in the turnaround of East Street in Bedminster. Simon organised a trader group over five years ago, and after being immediately elected as chair of the newly formed Bedminster Town Team, has overseen £500,000 of added investment into the area.

“Simon recognised the problems on East Street Bedminster many years ago in terms of customer numbers and a poor overall offer not relevant to younger people,” said George Grace, who nominated Simon for the award.

“I hope he is successful because he truly is a high street hero, and has helped get Bedminster recognised as a great place to live, shop and work.”

The competition is aimed at celebrating the hard work that has been put into the revitalisation, adaptation and diversification of high streets across the country. Now in it’s third year, the competition has introduced individual awards to acknowledge the those making a difference to their local community.

“Our local high streets remain the life and soul of towns, villages and cities across the country and I’d encourage as many of them as possible to enter this year’s competition before the closing date,” said High Streets Minister Andrew Percy.

In addition to the cash prize, Google are offering all winners a visit from The Digital Garage on Tour, a workshop that provides skills training for workshops and small businesses.
