First look at Bristol Airport’s new state of the art fire engine

By Mia Vines Booth  Wednesday Dec 21, 2022

Bristol Airport’s new fire engine looks more like a futuristic toy than a professional vehicle. Its state of the art design has led to it been described as the “Porsche 959 of firetrucks” by vehicle fanatics.

The Oshkosh Striker 3.0 is the latest addition to Bristol Airport’s fleet of fire vehicles, and it means business.

The 39 tonne fire truck can carry four person people, has a 7000BHP (break horsepower) and a top speed of 72 mph. It can also carry 12,000 litres of water, 1,700 litres of foam and a 7,500 litre per minute water pump. Bristol Airport’s fire team are currently completing an intensive training course on the new vehicle.

Bristol Airport is the first airport in the UK to take delivery of this third generation Oshkosh Striker ARFF vehicle, which can cost anywhere between £300,000 and £600,000, and are designed and built in Oshkosh’s facilities in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Graeme Gamble, chief operating officer at Bristol Airport said: “Our priority is the safety of passengers and colleagues in all Bristol Airport operations.

“The fire and rescue service is a critical part of our operation, and the fire team are permanently on  call day and night and ready to respond to any eventuality. We wanted to ensure that the new appliance is equipped with the very latest in firefighting technology.

“A complex environment such as Bristol Airport requires a specially trained fire team with its own specialist equipment and we are delighted to have added the Striker to the Airport’s fire vehicle fleet.”
