Cheltenham Road Tesco granted alcohol licence for first time
The infamous Tesco on Cheltenham Road has been successful in its application for an alcohol license.
The shop has not sold alcohol since it opened in 2011 due to concerns that it would not help the area’s street drinking problems.
Tesco applied to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm, seven days a week, but has been granted permission to sell booze between 9am and 9pm only.
Store bosses have also agreed with Avon & Somerset Police not to sell any beer or cider stronger than 5.5 per cent and no alcohol will be displayed in the windows or close to the entrance.
The shop hit the headlines a decade ago as riots broke out which were a culmination of ongoing protests against its arrival in the area.
Days after the Tesco Express did open, Stokes Croft and Cheltenham Road erupted into violence.
A second protest a week later also saw both police and protesters injured after rocks and missiles were thrown, and the cycle shop next door damaged.
