Bristol Uni students told to study at SS Great Britain due to overcrowding
History students at the University of Bristol will be close to more primary sources than usual if they follow advice given by their department as to where to study during the January exam period.
Due to overcrowding in libraries and a shortage of desks on the main campus, students have been told that they can reserve desks and have exclusive use of a reading room at the SS Great Britain.
Students told the Guardian that queues start from 7am to get desks in the busiest periods, with overcrowding getting worse as a result of the university’s rapid expansion.

A university spokesperson said: “We appreciate that study spaces are always in high demand in the run-up to exams and we encourage our students to make use of all the study spaces available including our libraries which run extended opening hours.
“For history students the school has been able to offer additional study space in the Brunel Institute on Bristol harbourside which is in close proximity to the main campus.”
The University of Bristol’s new £80m library on the corner of Woodland Road and Elton Road will have 2,000 study spaces but has not yet received planning permission.
Bristol City Council may also have to pay more money to the university under the terms of the sale agreement of the site of the former sorting office next to Temple Meads, according to recently published documents.
The site will form part of the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, which is due to open in 2022.
