Carol Vorderman celebrates Bristol’s ‘Hometown Heroes’
Carol Vorderman has celebrated the work of Bristol locals in the launch of Pride of Britain’s new series, ‘Hometown Heroes’.
Hometown Heroes is a series on Pride of Britain’s YouTube channel where celebrities meet local people who have made a difference to their communities.
In the debut episode, Vorderman, who lives in Clifton, talks to Katie Sparkes, founder of Flamingo Chicks, a charity which offers dance classes to disabled and ill children.
Katie began Flamingo Chicks after being disappointed at the lack of opportunities for her daughter Poppy, who has cerebral palsy.
The charity now has 1,400 volunteers, and prioritises an intergenerational approach, including getting care home residents involved in costume making.
In the video, Vorderman also interviewed Katy Taylor, director of Bristol Women’s Voice, a women’s equality organisation which seeks to amplify marginalised women’s voices.
Within Bristol Women’s Voice, the episode highlights Juliana Torres Garzón’s work in Bristol Women’s Voice’s safety project, and Natacha Sullivan’s work providing beauty treatments to vulnerable people in Bristol.
The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards is an annual award ceremony streamed on ITV which has taken place since 1999, celebrating the ‘unsung heroes’ who have supported charities.
Vorderman has hosted the show since its debut, and now co-hosts it with Ashley Banjo, founder of dance group Diversity.
