Bridgy McBridgeface leads way for bridge name

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Jul 5, 2016

Bridgy McBridgeface is the runaway leader of suggestions to name a bridge on the Bristol & Bath Railway Path.

Bristol24/7 readers have been coming up with suggestions for the bridge on the Easton and Lawrence Hill section of the path, which is getting a transformation thanks to Pukka Herbs, Sustrans and Bristol City Council’s Travelwest project.

Name suggestions can be entered by emailing [email protected] or tweeted using #namebristolbridge.

The Bristol public have until midnight on Wednesday, July 6 to name the bridge.

Could the bridge formerly known as Merchants Bridge be named Bridgy McBridgeface?

All of the entries will go before a judging panel who will whittle down the entries to five, and from this pupils from nearby City Academy and Whitehall Primary School will choose the winner.

The person who suggests the chosen name will not only win a number of Pukka Herbs prizes but also have the honour of having their name next to their winning suggestion on the bridge’s official plaque.

The bridge is the busiest part of the National Cycle Network, seeing more than 770,000 cycle journeys and one million journeys including pedestrians per year.

With the creative help of artist Robyn Boden and the children of City Academy and Whitehall Primary School, the bridge has taken on a new lease of life through a 90-metre mural celebrating the identity of the area and the people and wildlife that inhabit it.

It will even include a herb trail for those taking a leisurely stroll along the route.

Bridgy McBridgeface is a reminder of the UK’s new polar research ship, which was named RRS Sir David Attenborough despite the title Boaty McBoatface topping a public vote.

The name Boaty McBoatface lives on as the name of the ship’s high-tech remotely operated sub-sea vehicle.
