The stories behind Bristol’s three most famous memes

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Aug 19, 2025

On April 18 2017, a woman called Brenda was walking down Raglan Road in Bishopston, unaware that she would soon become an internet sensation.

Over in Westminster, prime minister Theresa May had just called a snap general election and Brenda’s reaction to the news would go down in history.

Her incredulity is not the only meme to have been made in Bristol:

Brenda was stopped for her vox-pop by BBC reporter Jon Kay, who tweeted that same day: “Safe to say, she’s not impressed.”

Kay later returned to talk to Brenda after the clip went viral. “I can’t believe all this,” she told him. “This is absolutely weird.”

The bar goes wild

Heart FM reporter Charlotte Gay had been sent to the Independence Sports Bar at Ashton Gate during the Euros in 2016 and was filming from the mezzanine level when Daniel Sturridge scored an injury time goal for England against Wales.

Charlotte first uploaded a short clip to Twitter, then a longer video to YouTube and the rest is history.

A few hundred Bristolian limbs have likely now been seen more than a billion times as the video has taken on a life of its own, the football turned into multiple different clips from US politics to a DVD screensaver.

We’ve got Auntie Beeb to thank again for this third clip taken outside the former Breakfast Box in Bedminster, where cocaine was served up alongside the bacon baps.

After 18 gang members were jailed for their part in the organised crime group, a customer at the cafe on Nelson Parade was told about the added extras that used to be on offer.

He definitely didn’t know what had been happening: “What? What! Nah, I never knew that! I never that!”
