School to permanently close after 50 years
After a tumultuous few years marked by petitions, fundraisers and a name change, a much-loved school known for its alternative education provision is permanently closing.
Bristol Waldorf School, formerly known as Bristol Steiner School, cited declining student numbers and financial struggles for the “difficult” decision to close its doors at the end of term.
The private school, located on Redland Hill close to the Downs, has been in operation for more than five decades offering a “child-centred, relational approach to learning”.
In late 2023, Bristol Waldorf School narrowly avoided closure by raising nearly £1m.

A spokesperson for Bristol Waldorf School explained the reasons for closure and thanked the community for its support over the years.
“This difficult decision was made by the board of trustees after careful consideration of the school’s long-term sustainability,” they said.
“Despite the dedication of our teachers, staff and families, it has not been possible to secure the financial and enrolment stability needed to continue operating the school into the future.
“Since its founding, Bristol Waldorf School has sought to offer an education inspired by Waldorf principles, nurturing creativity, curiosity and community.
“We are profoundly grateful to all those who have supported the school: our pupils, families, teachers, trustees, alumni and friends.
“Our priority during this period is to ensure a smooth and supportive transition for all our pupils and staff.”

In June, Bristol Waldorf School was rated “inadequate” in an Ofsted report which highlighted “a weak culture of safeguarding” and flaws in leadership and special educational needs and disabilities provision.
Inspectors blamed its alternative curriculum, known as the Waldorf or Steiner education method, for creating gaps in children’s knowledge.
Designed by Rudolph Steiner between 1861 and 1925, Steiner schools provide a “holistic” education, balancing academic learning with artistic and practical subjects such as music, woodwork and gardening.
Bristol Waldorf School’s final day of operation will be December 17.
