Pub of the week: The Beaufort Arms

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 3, 2014

The Beaufort Arms is one of those pubs frozen in time.

Exposed brickwork and wooden beams aren’t trendy design features, just how this backstreet Clifton boozer has evolved over the years.

A traditional cider house, the Beaufort Arms has recently been given a lick of paint by longstanding landlady Deborah Martin, here since 1998.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Located near the Downs, it has a close association with the Downs League and by the looks of framed team photos especially St Andrews FC.

This area of Bristol has one of the highest concentrations of pubs in the entire city, with the King’s Arms, Port of Call, Coach & Horses and Red Lion all within a 100-yard radius, and the Jersey Lilly and Blackboy Inn just the other side of Whiteladies Road.

But the Beaufort remains the most traditional of the lot, even with a freshly painted exterior.

Cider is the speciality here, with Taunton Traditional, Blackthorn, and Thatchers Dry, Gold and Cheddar Valley all on tap.

If ale is more to your liking, there is Sharp’s Doom Bar and Dartmoor Jail Ale.

Food on a weekday is of the rolls wrapped in cling film behind the bar variety, with Sunday lunch for £7.95 (including “fab gravy”) served on the Sabbath.
