A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Whitchurch, Whitchurch

By Ellie Pipe  Saturday Mar 16, 2024

The increasingly frantic hum of the commentator can be heard inside the Whitchurch on Thursday as punters gather to watch the afternoon races at Cheltenham.

A low cheer comes from some of the tables as the victor rides across the finish line, while plates of chips lie forgotten, but others are not to be so easily distracted from their game of pool.

A couple of newcomers ponder over the ample selection behind the bar, settling for a hot chocolate and ale respectively from the patient bartender, while the man next to them gets “the usual” cider.

Fortunately, this vast Greene King pub on Oatlands Avenue in Whitchurch has enough space to accommodate all tastes, and ages.

There’s something for all ages in the Whitchurch

Beyond the far side of the bar, the peaceful dining area is a far cry from the hub of activity surrounding the screens, pool tables and darts board. Here, an elderly couple are just finishing the last remnants of their meal, while multiple generations of a family sitting around a large table peruse the extensive menus.

It may be gone 2pm, but the kitchen is still being kept busy with orders and it’s no wonder as there is not one but two deals to choose from on Thursday alone, a two mains for £11.99 or a buy one get one free on burgers.

Alongside the usual selection of beers, spirits, wines and ciders behind the bar, including Thatchers in every flavour imaginable, the whirr of slushie machines in bright red and blue is the main draw for the pub’s smaller customers.

This, along with the vast playing area outside, make it a favourite with many families.

While some turn their attention back to the screens, where the next race is about to start, the main preoccupation for two late diners is finalising their shopping list as they plan a trip to Asda, a convenient stone’s throw away from the Whitchurch.
