New tapas bar and restaurant coming to Wapping Wharf

By Martin Booth  Monday Apr 16, 2018

Not content with running one bustling bar and restaurant at Wapping Wharf, the husband and wife team behind Cargo Cantina are opening another one taking inspiration from Spanish market tapas bars.

Gambas – the sister bar of Bravas on Cotham Hill (above) – will open in June in the corner unit on the first floor of Cargo 2 currently occupied by Spuntino.

With an interior inspired by the Mercat Central in Valencia – one of the largest and oldest markets in Europe – the new restaurant will specialise in Spanish tapas, seafood and paella, as well as having a seafood counter selling fresh fish to cook at home.

Kieran and Imogen Waite will be getting top quality produce, preparing it simply and keeping it at a price that allows customers to taste different things.

There will be a full tapas menu with a variety of vegetable or meat dishes, with the counter and specials board focusing on produce from the sea and having a few more interesting things for people to try.

“This spot at Cargo 2 is the perfect location for Gambas as it’s right on the harbourside with a fantastic terrace offering views that you really can’t find anywhere else in Bristol,” said Kieran, also behind Bakers & Co on Gloucester Road.

“It is hugely important to us that our restaurants reflect their context, and we are so excited to offer diners a place to truly relax, soak up the sunshine and fabulous views and, of course, tuck into delicious food.

“We love being part of the Wapping Wharf community with all its different businesses, reflecting Bristol’s unique independent spirit, and it was a no-brainer for us to open up Gambas there.”

Gambas will replace Spuntino

Gambas was originally due to open in 2017 within the converted shipping containers now occupied by Cargo Cantina.

But inspired by a trip to Mexico, Kieran and Imogen decided to open Cargo Cantina – biding their time before now announcing the imminent arrival of Gambas.

The pair hosted a Gambas pop-up at Bravas on Sunday, giving guests a taste of what to expect at the new restaurant while raising money for Action Against Hunger.

Stuart Hatton, director at Wapping Wharf developer Umberslade, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Kieran and Imogen will be opening Gambas at Cargo, adding a new string to Wapping Wharf’s bow and complimenting the eclectic mix of independent restaurants already there.”

The news comes only a month after the pair revealed that they will be opening an indoor street food night market and bar called Corner 77 on Stokes Croft, which in a year’s time will be transformed into Papa Diablo, a taco bar and restaurant with its own tortilla-making machine imported from Mexico.
