‘Intimate and charming’ Bristol restaurant voted number one in UK
A renowned Redland restaurant has added yet another accolade to its impressive collection.
SquareMeal has named Wilsons the number one restaurant in the UK praising its “sustainability credentials and world-class cooking”.
Wilsons, which was awarded a Michelin star in February 2025 alongside its existing green star, grows much of the produce on its menu at its own market garden.
Located on Chandos Road, it was opened in 2016 by Jan Ostle and Mary Wilson with their bakery, Bread Shop, open a few doors down the road.

Square Meal says its annual Top 100 Restaurant Awards is “a chance for us to shout about the best-of-the-best in both emerging and established culinary roles and allows us to celebrate the incredible chefs and hospitality teams out there going above and beyond to give their diners top-class experiences”.
“Wilsons in Bristol epitomises the ideal neighbourhood restaurant, delivering confident modern British cooking crafted almost entirely from produce grown in its own market garden,” says Square Meal’s citation.
“Intimate and charming, it’s one of only a handful of UK restaurants to hold both a Michelin star and a Green Star.
“And yet, despite its sustainability credentials and world-class cooking, Wilsons remains remarkably good value – a reflection of a team committed to fairness and purpose.”

The other Bristol restaurants in the top 100 are Dongnae at 45, Other at 46 and Lapin at 96.
Dongnae, meaning ‘neighbourhood,’ opened on Chandos Road in September 2024 by couple Kyu Jeon and Duncan Robertson, founders of Bokman on Nine Tree Hill.
The team said: “At Dongnae, fire cooking takes centre stage through traditional Korean BBQ on our charcoal grill, alongside a constant focus on seasonality.
“Our dishes change daily to reflect the best produce available, so there’s always something new to discover.”
Other from Emma Lyons and Zak Hitchman opened in Bedminster in 2024 and serves food that does not conform to a particular style or cuisine, hence its name.
Lapin is the second project from Dan O’Regan and Jack Briggs-Horan who have brought a modern take on French cuisine and bistro culture to Wapping Wharf.
