Family opens second ‘authentic’ Chinese restaurant

By Leah Hoyle  Friday Nov 15, 2024

A family run Chinese restaurant has opened a new premises – this time with meat options – just a short distance from their first vegan home.

Mother and son duo, May and Jay Thind have worked to create an established collection of restaurants and cafes around Bristol and Suyuan Bistro being their fourth venture.

Suyuan’s first outlet that opened in 2017, still runs a restaurant just off Queen’s Square.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

The bistro differs from their original vegetarian restaurant, mainly because the Thinds are now serving delicious meat options like mushroom and pork dumplings, honey cooked pork ribs and hoisin duck breast.

Chef and co-owner May Thind told Bristol 24/7 that couples would come for meals and one person would always complain “why aren’t there any meat options, you should just do both.”

Suyuan Bistro replaced Abletrics on Gloucester Road

Each dish is made to order allowing every option to be made gluten-free or vegetarian as and when needed.

Jay Thind decided to make their restaurants ‘bring your own booze’, encouraging customers to bring along their own drinks, offering a cheaper and customisable meal.

The honey cooked pork ribs and spicy cubed salmon are Jay Thind’s favourite options on the menu

Although the restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol, there are plenty of non-acloholic tipples that are on the menu. From range of teas to classic coffees and smoothies, customers can choose from a large variety.

The current customer favourite is the Yangzhi Gan Lu with mango, grapefruit and coconut milk.

The menu has both vegetarian and meat options, unlike their previous only vegan restaurant

Suyuan offers breakfast, lunch and dinner – with options of all day breakfast also available.

The diverse menu has a cozy, homemade feel to it – all the options being authentic Chinese. They also have quintessential English meals with a Chinese spin such as the Chinese style cooked breakfast.

The restaurant is spacious with many seating options

Replacing an electrics business, the Thind family converted the space from scratch with handmade decorations from China.

This new Suyuan Bistro focuses on delivering “authentic Chinese flavours with quality ingredients” providing an option for everyone.
