End of an era as ‘near legendary after-hours drinking den’ closes

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Apr 30, 2025

A late-night bar specialising in whisky has closed its doors.

The owners of the Woods on Park Street Avenue have blamed their landlord’s “aggressive stance” for being forced to shut.

The bar off Park Street is now boarded up with drinkers expressing their sadness about the sudden closure of what was one of Bristol’s oldest bars.

In a statement on Instagram, the Woods team said: “It is with great sadness that we announce that the Woods has ceased trading with immediate effect.

“Due to the landlord (sic) aggressive stance and the serving of a demand for Covid rent arrears it has pushed the business over the edge of viability.

“We’d like to thank you all for your loyal custom over the years, with many great memories created at the Woods.”

Time Out described the Woods just off Park Street as “a near-legendary after-hours drinking den”.

“When other bars start battening down the hatches for the night, Woods is just coming alive – unlike the butterflies, moths and assorted animal skulls that make up most of the decoration on the walls.”

The bar’s closure has been met with sadness on social media by the many people who have drunk there over the years.

lauraleighchapman said: “Gutted. So many stories of life, love, joy and regret, told between your walls.”

trashycharlie added: “Oh wow this is sad. So sorry for you all. Thanks for the good times.”
