Bristol cafe to source house coffee from China
A Bristol cafe is thought to be the first in the UK to source their house coffee from China.
The new house blend at Ka:Fei on the centre comes from Menglian in Yunnan province. Banka is named after the two nearby villages – Banka Yi and Banka Er) where the coffee was grown and harvested.
Banka, roasted by Origin in Cornwall, has tasting notes of pink lady apples, yuzu and brown sugar.
Ka:Fei co-owners Arrow Jie and Fency Feng are both from China; Arrow from Guangdong and Fency from Jiangsu.
Their new house coffee – with a label featuring a watercolour illustration of their cafe by Jennifer Lin – comes from a farm and a washing station that were originally developed by Mr Hu, a native of Yunnan who has been producing coffee in Menglian for almost 20 years.
He was one of the first farmers to engage in large scale coffee production in the area and now employs hundreds of harvesters from various ethnic groups.
