Bar owner asks customers for support after police request license review

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Jun 24, 2026

It’s the most authentic Spanish bar this side of Salamanca but now la policía are of the opinion that El Rincón is “being operated contrary to the licencing objective(s) of prevention of crime and disorder, the prevention of public nuisance, and public safety”.

Avon & Somerset Police’s request to Bristol City Council for a review of the premises licence for the bar on North Street has prompted the bar’s owner to appeal to his “customers, amigos and neighbours” for help.

The bar is very popular with football and rugby fans on matchdays at nearby Ashton Gate, with punters usually spilling out to the pavement; and also holds regular events including flamenco nights and live music, as well as hosting Spanish language classes.

In a notice pinned to the front window of the bar, El Rincón founder and owner David Wilson writes “to reassure everyone that El Rincón remains open and continues to operate as normal”.

Wilson said: “For over a decade we have worked hard to create a welcoming venue that celebrates Spanish culture through food, music, dance and community events.

“We are proud of the thousands of customers, performers and local residents who have supported us throughout that time.”

Wilson has asked anybody who wants to share their views for them to be “honest, factual and based on your own experiences”.

He added: “Thank you for your continued support, kindness and encouragement during this process.”

Bristol24/7 has contacted Avon & Somerset Police for a comment.
