Helen Mirren stars in her first horror flick: a haunted house movie "inspired by true events"
Phantom Thread, Daniel Day-Lewis’s alleged swansong, is this week’s big awards contender (go here for our full review). If that doesn’t float your boat, there’s a diverse selection of other new releases, including Helen Mirren’s first horror flick (Winchester), a heist movie with 50 Cent (Den of Thieves), a new film version of venerable WWI trench drama (Journey’s End – go here for our review) and Denzel Washington getting his ‘fro on (Roman J. Israel, Esq). There are also weekend previews of new kiddie animation Tad the Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas.
The Japan Foundation’s Touring Film Programme arrives at the Watershed and continues until Feb 13. This week’s event cinema includes silent classic Arsenal with a live score performed by Bristol’s own Bronnt Industries Kapital at the Cube, Jesus of Montreal at Bristol Cathedral, and – contain your excitement! – the world premiere of The Mayor’s Race at the Watershed. As usual, follow the links for further details and screening times and go here for our comprehensive film listings.
