Great Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev follows 2014’s Oscar nominated anti-corruption drama Leviathan with another lauded, emotionally devastating parable which unfolds on a smaller, family-sized scale. As the marriage between beauty salon owner Zhenya (Maryana Spivak) and office drone Boris (Alexey Rozin) collapses, they’re oblivious to the effect that their continual feuding is having on their sensitive 12-year-old son, Alyosha (Matvey Novikov) – especially because neither of them particularly wants custody of him as they’re both looking forward to new lives with new partners. Then he vanishes and a police search commences, laying bare the couple’s selfishness.

Heavily influenced by Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage, Loveless bagged both the Jury Prize at Cannes and Best Film at last year’s London Film Festival and has now been nominated for an Oscar. Go here for our full review.
