Underrepresented filmmakers sought by festival
Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival help address and improve diversity within the filmmaking community with their Widening the Lens programme, which is now looking for new applicants.
The programme has a particular focus on removing barriers and increasing opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers in the early stages of their careers.
UK based filmmakers with disabilities, LGBT filmmakers, and those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are invited to apply for next year’s scheme.
Widening the Lens had a successful start in 2016, with Marley Morrison winning the main prize and receiving support for her short film Baby Gravy.
Next year, 15 filmmakers will be selected for a series of workshops, masterclasses and one-to-one mentoring with industry professionals over five months.
The candidates will then be matched with a mentor who will work with them closely over a three-month period, ending with a celebration day in May.
Widening the Lens’ is supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund with the British Film Institute’s Film Forever National Lottery Fund. For more information and to apply, visit www.encounters-festival.org.uk/training-diverse-filmmakers-widening-lens/
