Bad Film Bonanza
While the Disney blockbuster juggernaut The Avengers: Age of Ultron hoovers up just about every cinemagoing pound over the next few weeks, connoisseurs of, shall we say, less accomplished cinema will gather at the Bristol Bierkeller to celebrate a time when the Marvel Universe was not so highly valued. We may be used to the Samuel L. Muthafuggin’ Jackson incarnation of Nick Fury, but way back in 1998 another thespian titan pulled on the eyepatch. Yep, we’re talking about The Hoff. There are still some tickets left for the Bristol Bad Film Club’s screening of the howlingly awful Nick Fury TV pilot on Wednesday April 29.
There’s no such luck if you’re after tickets for the (other) BBFC’s next screening. Appropriately enough, they’re showing Tobe Hooper’s sex-crazed naked space vampire flick Lifeforce at the Bristol Planetarium on Thursday, May 21. But this has already sold out.
The good news is that you can have a say in choosing one of the films for their July screening, which takes place at the Redgrave Theatre on Thursday, July 2. This will be a double bill with the entertaining new documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films.
Your task is to select a Cannon ‘classic’ to go with it, by voting here. There are eight truly terrible films to choose from. Here’s the BBFC’s own run-down of the ninja, breakdance (remember that?) and Norris/Van Damme/Stallone vehicles vying for your mirth.
The Apple (1980)
Musical set in the ‘future’, i.e. 1994. A young couple enters the world of the music industry, but also the world of drugs.
Breakin’ 2 – Electric Boogaloo (1984)
A developer tries to bulldoze a community recreation centre. The local breakdancers try to stop it.
Ninja III – The Domination (1984)
An evil ninja attempts to avenge his death from beyond the grave, by possessing an innocent woman’s body
American Ninja (1985)
American soldier, obviously very skilled in martial arts, single-handedly takes on mercenaries in the Philippines.
Invasion U.S.A. (1985)
A one-man army comes to the rescue of the United States when a spy attempts an invasion.
The Delta Force (1986)
An elite team of commandoes try to free airline passengers seized by terrorists
Over The Top (1987)
Lincoln Hawk (Sly Stallone) is a struggling trucker who arm wrestles on the side to make extra cash while trying to bond with his estranged son.
Bloodsport (1988)
Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Frank Dux enters an illegal underground martial arts competition where serious injury and even death are not unknown
