Motion might close despite ‘significant financial backing’

By Karen Johnson  Saturday Mar 15, 2025

A popular Bristol club that is under the threat of closure has announced an update on its efforts to save the venue, revealing “significant financial backing and support”.

When Motion announced the impending end of their lease in July 2025, a huge part of Bristol’s nightlife was under question with the venue being a hotspot for local artists and bands.

The team behind the club have now said that they have offered a “strong, carefully thought-out bid” to the landlords which focuses on Motion’s vital role in Bristol’s cultural and economic ecosystem. Despite this and unified efforts from the community, they feel that they might have to leave the venue in July.

In an update shared on Instagram, they said: “This isn’t just about buying ourselves a bit more time, it’s about securing Motion for generations to come.

“Since we announced that our lease was ending, the support has been overwhelming. From people who’ve raved here to the artists and promoters who’ve built their career on the dancefloors to local voices who understand what Motion means to Bristol – this place matters.”

The team emphasised that Motion isn’t “just a nightclub” but a space for people to come together for leisure and employment while contributing to the local economy.

They added: “It aligns with the council’s own policies on protecting cultural spaces, yet time and time again, we’ve seen how easily these spaces can be lost.

“The bureaucracy and planning red tape that developers see as an inconvenience should actually be used to protect places like Motion – not leave them exposed to redevelopment.

With the end of its lease around the corner, the team at Motion is determined to keep “pushing” so as to save Motion and other similar venues.

The team have also hinted at big news due to be announced very soon.

Located within a former Victorian warehouse, Motion first started hosting parties on skate ramps within the building in 2006 before transitioning into a full-time nightclub and music venue in 2015.
