Unique kites to remember loved ones lost during pandemic

By Martin Booth  Monday Jan 29, 2024

People who died during the pandemic will be remembered on kites as part of a special memorial event being organised by a Bristol artist.

Luke Jerram is now looking for participants to take part in the project who will need to send in a photo of someone they lost, with their face then applied onto a specially made kite.

On March 23 – four years to the day since the first lockdown – the kites will be flown from a hill in Bristol.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“This will allow the participants an opportunity to remember their loved ones and grieve their loss at a time when much of the world is moving on from the effects of the pandemic,” said Jerram, whose previous projects have included a waterslide down Park Street, public pianos and a giant inflatable Moon.

“This project will be a way of supporting and connecting the community in the city and the act of flying the kites may act as a form of healing for those taking part and for those watching.”

All participants will be invited to fly their special memorial kite at the event and will be allowed to keep it afterwards.

To take part, email a digital photo to [email protected] with your name and phone number, and the name of the person you are remembering.
