First look at Upfest 2022

By Isobel Turner  Friday May 13, 2022

Upfest is in the process of breaking new ground in the field of mural painting – but you’ll have to wait until next week to find out how.

With the festival taking place on May 28 and 29, some artists have started to create their masterpieces as the walls of south Bristol are once again brought to life with colour.

Daniela de Castro Sucre is an artist, muralist and designer currently painting her contribution to the street art festival in Bedminster.

The main content of the painting remains a secret but she has given hints, calling her piece “an optical illusion” and “a brand new thing in the world of murals”.

Daniella has a degree in graphic design and has painted in the studio of Venezualan Conchita Firgau, an artist she called “a master of Spanish realism”.

She worked in Firgau’s studio for three years while at school, and views it as an invaluable passage to her career as an artist.

The rich diversity of both artists and artworks this Upfest go hand in hand, including female artists and artists of colour.

“A lot of them are very diverse and really their art is diverse and that is, I think, the most fun part, that there is all kinds of street art here from like the most realistic and like strict and classic, to very street arty graffiti and neon,” Daniella told Bristol24/7.

On the festival weekend, hundreds of artists will be painting live as well presenting the murals that have been created over this month by artists including Dan Kitchener and My Dog Sighs.
