Great Bristol 10k 2017 now open for entries

By James Higgins  Wednesday Jan 18, 2017

Entries are now open for this summer’s Great Bristol 10k, which takes place on Sunday, May 7.

One runner already beginning his training is Terry Maley, whose youngest daughter Jo tragically passed away last year at the age of just 36 from ovarian cancer.

“I’m running to raise money, but raising awareness is just as important,” Terry said.

“I want people to be aware of the symptoms and the need for health checks. Probably most importantly of all, I’m running for Jo who was a keen runner and ran many half marathons.”

No stranger to running himself, Terry, 67, has completed 12 half marathons before. “I got back into running yesterday, would you believe. The time I posted could have been better, but I’m determined.”

Denise Nicholls has been running since September around Filton where she lives. Denise beat cancer in 2007, and now, a decade later and more fit than ever, she says she’s ready to take on the 10km challenge.

She has been motivated to join the run in memory of her father who passed away from cancer, and to give her running a higher goal.

“I’m hoping to complete the run in one hour and 10 minutes,” Denise beamed. “And I’ll be cheered on by my daughters, granddaughters, and even the ex-husband.”

David Runcimun broke his femur while playing rugby for Cheltenham North in May last year.

“Femurs can take up to a year to repair, so the 10k run will be my first major physical challenge since the injury,” David said.

He won’t be running the race alone and will be joined by his fiancée, Shawni. A sports therapist herself, Shawni is keen to complete the run to support David and celebrate his recovery.

Last year 12,500 runners took part in the inaugural Great Bristol 10K, raising an estimated £1.5 million for charitable causes. This year’s official local charity is The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity.

The Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10k will take place on Sunday, May 7. To enter, sign up here. Make it a day for the whole family by also signing up to the Simplyhealth Great Bristol Family Mile which takes place after the 10km event.

If you’re looking to challenge yourself further, sign up for this year’s Simplyhealth Great Bristol Half Marathon on Sunday, September 17.
