Were you an extra in The Medusa Touch?

By Robin Askew  Tuesday Jul 19, 2016

Hot from Aces High and the ground-breaking TV adaptation of Quentin Crisp’s The Naked Civil Servant, director Jack Gold headed west nearly 40 years ago to film the 1978 supernatural thriller The Medusa Touch. This starred Richard Burton as a telekinetic wrong ‘un who vows to take revenge on hypocritical god-botherers from the comfort of his hospital bed. His piece de resistance is the demolition of ‘Minster Cathedral’ when Her Maj is due to attend a service.

Although the fictional cathedral was supposed to be in London, these scenes were all shot in Bristol – specifically at Bristol Cathedral, with hordes of local extras recruited for the crowd scenes. Now the Cathedral is asking anyone who took part to get in touch and share their memories for a special Bristol Film Festival screening on October 29.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“We are very excited to be working with Bristol Film Festival to screen The Medusa Touch in the Cathedral for the very first time,” says the Cathedral’s Development Director Naomi Miller. “It will be a surreal experience to sit in the Cathedral while watching exactly the same space collapse around you on screen! We would love to welcome people who were involved in the making of the film back to the Cathedral, hear their stories and share this special event together.”

If you were involved in any way in the making of the film, contact Naomi on 0117 946 8184 or email [email protected]
