Bridging the Gap in employment

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Jan 8, 2019

One of the key barriers to improving diversity in companies is lack of management training to help them achieve it, according to Babbasa.

The St Paul’s-based youth empowerment organisation is working to address the issue with the launch of Bridging the Gap, a new course aimed at helping Bristol businesses improve their inclusivity and attractiveness to potential employees.

It will harness Babbasa’s research and experience with more than 1,600 young people and 150 cross-sector agencies to share the benefits of an inclusive workplace.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The professional development programme will start on the January 30 and consists of four modules, incorporating interactive activities.

Babbasa works to improve opportunities for all across the city

Topics to be covered include cultural competency at leadership level, understanding the different communities in Bristol, reaching younger audiences through targeted recruitment, and nurturing young people in the workplace.

Bridging the Gap will break down how cultural differences, religion, and how subtleties such as mannerisms can lead to misunderstandings between different ethnicities that prevent positive working relationships.

The course also uses Babbasa’s research and experience to give insight into conscious and unconscious biases in the workplace.

Through recognising and understanding these biases, companies then have the ability and the support to make the top-down workplace changes that can create a more representative workforce and culture.

Sessions will take place on January 30, February 28, March 21, and April 16.
