Boomsatsuma students showcase work at ‘Books on Photography’ Festival

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Dec 12, 2023

Boomsatsuma students immersed themselves in Bristol’s annual Books on Photography festival, affectionately known as ‘BOP’ this Autumn.

Hosted at Paintworks, Bristol’s creative quarter and home to the Martin Parr Foundation and Royal Photographic Society galleries, the festival brought together photobook publishers, booksellers, and photographers from across Europe.

Students from boomsatsuma’s distinguished Photography and Print degree and the College Photography Collective played an integral role, showcasing their work and assisting in organising the event.

Prior to the festival, degree students participated in a week long masterclass with renowned photographer Chris Hoare. Following the collaboration, five students were selected to develop and print their work with Photographique, a leading UK photographic lab. Notably, prints by MJ Price and Missy MacDonald were sold at BOP.

Sam Fordham, boomsatsuma’s Head of Photography, commended the students for their outstanding work and the invaluable opportunities provided by BOP. He highlighted the festival as a perfect platform for students to gain experience, work with professionals, and engage with the publishing industry.

For College students beginning their two-year course, BOP served as a remarkable introduction to the professional photography and publishing world. Matthew Broadhead, head of the College’s Photography Collective, expressed satisfaction with the students’ learning experiences, emphasising the value of gaining insights into photo book production. The immersive experience at BOP proved invaluable for students, providing them with skills to navigate the multifaceted world of photography and publishing.
