Ever unpredictable Turner Prize-winning artist turned Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen‘s fourth feature is an adaptation by Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn of the Lynda La Plante drama series that was originally made for ITV back in 1983.
Rapturously received by critics at its Toronto Film Festival premiere, Widows casts the great Viola Davis as the leader of a quartet of women (completed by Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Erivo) who set out to conduct a dangerous heist after their hubbies perish. Proof, if any were needed, that it’s perfectly possible to pull off a hugely enjoyable, crowd-pleasing genre film that also has much to say about race, class and gender.
