In October 1962, a plane carrying controversial socialist oil magnate Enrico Mattei (Gian Maria Volonté) plummets from the sky, killing everyone on board, in what appears to be a tragic accident. Or was it? Using a semi-documentary approach, Francesco Rosi‘s powerful investigative thriller explores the various conspiracy theories and leaves the audience to choose from the hypotheses presented.
The Mattei Affair co-won the Palme d’Or at Cannes back in 1972 and is back on screen to launch the shed’s November States of Danger and Deceit: European Political Thrillers in the 1970s Sunday brunch season.
