Gamblin’ Bob (Roger Duchesne) is a bit of a loser, so he decides to revert to his previous career as a robber, masterminding an audacious raid on the casino at Deauville. Jean-Pierre Melville‘s first original script –  and also his first foray into the world of noir – is an absurdist comedy that’s an obvious precursor to the French New Wave, being packed with style, pretentious dialogue and the obligatory jazz score. There’s also a fabulously brooding performance form Duchesne as the “aging young man”.

It’s a suitable choice to launch the ‘shed’s September Jean-Pierre Melville – An Independent Spirit Sunday brunch season, following on from the re-release of Le Doulos.
