Ingmar Bergman’s classic morality tale tells of a knight (Max von Sydow) who returns from the Crusades to find Sweden ravaged by plague, and winds up playing chess with Death for his life. Without it, we might never have had Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. That’s right: the one thing they never tell you about Bergman’s 1957 masterpiece is how funny it is.
The Cube’s ‘Film and Philosophy’ screening will be followed by a discussion about the film’s themes and their philosophical relevance.
