Edward Scissorhands

Director
Tim Burton
Certificate
PG
Running Time
105 mins

Calling at the derelict castle at the end of the road, the Avon Lady (Dianne Wiest) discovers Edward (Johnny Depp), a boy with scissors in place of hands, who’s been hiding there since the death of his inventor. She takes him home, where he charms the locals with his hairdressing and topiary skills, before falling victim to deceit suspicion and jealousy. The performances in Tim Burton‘s 1991 film are perfectly pitched, with just the right mixture of pantomime and sensitivity. And although Burton pokes a lot of fun at Suburbia, this is ultimately a sad and very moving little film with a serious moral about the nature of normality.

It’s back on screen in the Everyman’s late night cult classics season.
