The winner of the Best Foreign Language Film gong at the 1970 Oscars, Greek director Costa-Gavras‘s magnificent political thriller is based on the true story of the assassination of a prominent liberal opponent (Yves Montand) of the Greek military regime in 1963. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays the investigating magistrate who comes under intense pressure not to investigate the murder too rigorously. Needless to say, the film wan’t made in Greece but was shot in Algeria. And it wasn’t shown back home until the military government was overthrown in 1974.
