Having famously shot Tangerine on an iPhone, US indie filmmaker Sean Baker takes a more conventional approach with his follow-up, which once again focuses on the lives of the marginalised.

In this case, it’s precocious, impressionable six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Kimberly Prince), who lives with her mum in a run-down budget motel called The Magic Castle. This right next door to a Disney theme park and run by a kindly Willem Dafoe. While Moonee’s life is one big adventure, her mother struggles to find the rent. Young Ms. Prince’s performance and Baker’s empathetic approach have been universally praised, making this a treat for anyone who enjoyed Beasts of the Southern Wild. Go here for our full review.
