An idiosyncratic if stylistically rather twee coming-of-age story by first-time Brit writer/director Deborah Haywood, this lauded, quirky feelbad drama has misfit mother Lyn (Joanna Scanlan) and daughter Iona (newcomer Lily Newmark) relocating to a new town for a fresh start.

Needless to say, things don’t go entirely according to plan when Iona starts to court the mandatory bullying pack of mean girls at her new school, while Lyn seeks a somewhat radical solution to her body image problem. It’s all relentlessly and, indeed, refreshingly misanthropic in a manner that Todd Solondz might recognise. Director Deborah Haywood and producer Gavin Humphries will be present for a Q&A after the Watershed’s 6pm screening on Wed 18 July.
