Does Oscar bait get any more, erm, Oscar baity than this? Whiplash and La La Land director Damien Chazelle directs a biopic of unimpeachable American hero Neil Armstrong (note for younger readers: the first man to walk on the Moon).

It’s adapted by Oscar winning Spotlight writer Josh Singer from James R. Hansen’s official biography, First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, and has La La Land star Ryan Gosling in the title role. Claire Foy gets the role of Mrs. Armstrong. The project has been in the works for 15 years, with Clint Eastwood originally attached to direct. Chazelle promises a more interesting approach than the flag-waving one, underlining the danger and uncertainty surrounding the Apollo 11 mission. Mind you, the bar in this particular genre has been set very high indeed by Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff.
