She was an Academy Award winning Hollywood screen siren, whose credits included It’s a Wonderful Life and Oklahoma! He was a smalltime Scouse actor. Yep, it’s an odd couple romance that’s so improbable that it can only be true.

Annette Bening stars as Gloria Grahame, who bagged the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Bad and the Beautiful in 1952. But now it’s the late ’70s and she’s doing the Norma Desmond thing in a north London boarding house. It’s here that struggling young Liverpudlian actor Peter Turner (Jamie Bell) meets and falls in love with her. Paul McGuigan‘s first film as director since that grotty box office bomb Victor Frankenstein is something of a return to form, with terrific performances from its two stars
